Furled Leaders

Furled leaders are not new, however what is new is the materials used to make them and this is what makes them all the better.  The original furled leaders were made from horse hair and possible silk.  However as technology moved on and materials became available that made making a tapered leader easier, their manufacture dropped off.  A bit like horse hair used in car seats.  The good news is that although the new materials make it cheaper and easier to make leaders the end result is significantly inferior to the the furled leader.

So what makes the furled leader so good, it's simple really, the turnover of the fly.  Furled leaders give you the ability to cast the fly with unparalleled delicacy and accuracy.  Extruded mono or fluro cannot provide the turnover capability a furled leader provides.

But let's get rid of some fallacies that are going around at the moment.

Thread or nylon?  Well that depends on you, but a thread furled leader provides you with the most supple furled leader that can be made.  This has been tested and proven so many times the argument can be considered irrelevant.  Our thread leaders are made from 180 denier thread and they will provide you with the best possible leader available on the market today.  They will not fray or degrade any quicker or slower than a nylon leader.  In fact a thread furled leader should be able to last you a whole season (or longer) with a little bit of simple care.

Visibility.   'You can see a thread furled leader on the water!'  Hate to tell you this but, under the water, you can see all leaders.  Fish need to eat and they are not spooked by every bit of flotsam and jetsam that comes downstream.  So that is why you can cast up 60' and catch a fish at your feet.  If you are casting to rising fish you have as much chance of spooking the fish with the butt of your nylon leaders as you do with a thread furled leader.  The argument is irrelevant.

Connection.  Connection to your line is made via a knotless shorb loop and another shorb loop is provided for your tippet. Just tie a surgeon's loop into you tippet and you can then make your leader as long as you like.  If you would like, we can incorporate a leader ring into the leader.  Yes a metal leader ring.  These small rings will not affect the casting ability of the leader and add no real weight to the leader, they are just another option.  Be very wary of any manufacturer that glues the ends of their leaders to provide a loop, this is an amateurish finish which is going to add stiffness to the butt and will ultimately fail.

So in the end, it doesn't matter whether you  use a thread or a nylon furled leader, each will provide you with a superior product over the commercial extruded nylon leader.  There is a lot of hype and conjecture about thread leaders, and there is a simple solution, give them a go.

Our Dry/Wet Leaders are made in thread and monofilament.  Give your thread furled leader a quick rub down with floatant at the start of the day and it perform perfectly.  Let it get wet and you have a great supple wet leader.  The mono leaders are special in that they will give you a little more shock absorption and will naturally sink.

The butt on our Nymphing leader is hi-vis so you can react as soon as the leader starts to straighten.  No more waiting for your indicator to go under, as soon as your line starts to straighten it indicates the flies have stopped moving.

Our competition leaders have been designed in consultation with one of the leading furled leader designers in the UK.  The formulae will give you excellent turn over and accuracy and ensure the power of your cast is transferred to your fly.

If, for any reason, you aren't entirely happy with your furled leader I will  work with you and construct alternatives for you until you are happy, at no additional cost.  Try them I know you will enjoy them.
